Physician Marketing, Sales, & EducationTopics related to pharma's communications with physicians, including marketing, sales, and support of symposia and continuing medical eduaction (CME)
I was aksed this question and thought I'd post it here to see if anyone could help with the answer:
Do you know what the average cost of a pharma sales call is? I heard a number at HCEA Summit this week of $1800.
I replied: I haven't heard numbers that high, more in the $600-$800 range. Maybe if you add free lunch for the staff and/or AWP of samples dropped off, it could be that high.
I just found this number in the PMN Reprint "Intelligent Online Sampling Strategies": the average estimated cost of $142 for an office-based physician call (Scott-Levin RAPP Study Report, 2002).
This may be a little low for current costs, but it surely puts the lie to any estimate in the $1800 range!
It's also important to consider the cost per contact. How many sales calls result in face to face time with physicians? I think you are looking at least at a factor of X3.

Any other estimates out there?
SINCE SALES HAS TO OCOVER COMPANY EXPENSES ULTIMATELY THE COST OF A CALL IS COMPANY EXPENSES DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SALES CALLS. I AGREE THAT THERE ARE OTHER PROMOIOTNAL CONTACTS THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE FACTORED BUT THAT WOULD BE EASY - WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF THESE OTHER CONTACTS AND SIMPLY DO THE MATH, HOWEVER THE COST OF A SALES CALL IS WAY ABOVE $600-$800
Most sales and marketing agreement to spend an average of nearly $ 200,000 to maintain sales of their field. The work of the costs of an average sales per call.
I would have thought it depended on the type of call and what was expected of the rep! $140.00 is low and $1800 is high end. I imagine it is somewhere in between.
